H-6 2-6-6-2 Compound Articulated Steam Locomotives 1300 is one in a series of photo booklets.

Photos in this booklet include both Baldwin builder photos and in-service pictures of C&O's H-6 2-6-6-2 type locomotive built in 1949. No. 1309, the last of the series of 10 was, in fact, the last commercially built steam locomotive for use by a railroad in the U. S. These locomotives were essentially duplicates of the first H-6s, built in the early 1920s. The new 1300-09 were simply to replace/supplement these older engines that were perceived as being at the end of their serviceable lives. This type was primarily used for mine shifter runs in the coal fields.
